Book Talk: Supermaker

Howdy! If you're reading this blog post, it means you've made it through the first nine months of 2020. Take a second to literally pat yourself on the back and give yourself a big hug. This year has been a tough one, but stay strong y'all! We got this!

In this post I'm going to be talking about the book Supermaker: Crafting Business on Your Own Terms by Jaime Schmidt. This is the first of (hopefully) many book related posts on the blog, so buckle up buttercups because I've got a lot of great books and resources to gush over and share with you down the road!

While books aren’t exactly a “forgotten” source of information, I feel like they don't get the attention they deserve. These days we turn to immediate resources, like searching on a computer or cell phone for a quick answer, instead of picking up a book to learn about what we're searching for. You don’t need me to tell you this, but I’m simply reminding you that there are SO MANY books out there with valuable information!

I can definitely say that throughout the process of starting my business I have been reading all kinds of books and have repeatedly relied on them for information AND inspiration. So what I'm saying is... get off Tik Tok already and go read a book please.

Without further ado, let’s talk about what you came here to read about:

Supermaker: Crafting Business on Your Own Terms by Jaime Schmidt

This book is about Jaime Schmidt and her story of how she started her natural deodorant business literally from the stovetop in her kitchen and grew it into the international powerhouse brand we know today as Schmidt's Naturals

Supermaker begins with Jaime telling her story, starting all the way from before she even started making deodorant. She takes us through the chapters of her life, sharing her journey before her business, to the moment she realized her passion for making deodorant, to the creation of her first products and first sales and ultimately all of her growth from then on.

Throughout Supermaker, Jaime shares several pages of “quick tips". These pages are filled with helpful ideas and recommendations that complement each chapter of her story.

Some of the main themes of these tips are:

  • Owning your shit

  • Community: build yours & nurture it

  • “Say yes now, then figure out how”

  • Self-confidence & following your intuition

  • Experimentation

  • Be relentless & resilient

  • Self discovery

  • Problem solving

While I wouldn’t consider Supermaker to be a “how-to business” book (thank goodness because there's so many of those already), instead I would describe it as a super relatable and REALLY inspiring story. It’s a refreshing change of pace from other business books I’ve read in the past and it was honestly fun and exciting to read through.

This book is great for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned entrepreneur, a newbie entrepreneur, or simply anyone who enjoys reading about successful bad-ass boss women who get shit done.

I think sometimes it can be really hard for people to envision their desired path, whether it be because of personal doubt or other outside factors, but I think it’s really helpful to read and witness other people go through their own journeys. It's important to remind ourselves that underneath the successful businesses we see on the outside was years and years of hard work, failures, and everything else that comes with putting in the time to make your dreams come true.

Supermaker is a great reminder that you don’t need to have all the answers you wish you could have before starting something. It’s a reminder that you can take on challenges as they present themselves to you. It's a reminder that there’s someone else out there making the scary leap just like you... so go on already and LEAP!

Well that's all folks! As always, thanks for reading. Leave me a comment below if you happen to read this book too; I'd love to hear your thoughts.
