Sirui HA-77 Horizontal Arm

In this blog post I'm going to be talking about one of my most used and cherished pieces of photography gear: the Sirui Horizontal Arm. If you happen to shoot product photography or stop motions, this horizontal arm could be your new best friend. Ditch the c-stand already and use the Sirui Horizontal Arm with your tripod to shoot all of your top down angles, flat lays, and stop motions.

What is the Sirui Ha-77 Horizontal Arm?

The Sirui HA-77 Horizontal Arm is a telescoping cross arm that attaches to your tripod. Think of it as a camera boom. To attach this horizontal arm, just detach your tripod head from the tripod’s legs then screw on the horizontal arm. Once the horizontal arm is secure to the tripod, reattach your tripod head and finally attach your camera to the head. Make sure to add a light bag of sand or two as counterweights to secure the camera.

Some Sirui HA-77 Specs:

  • Load Capacity: 11 lb

  • 19.7 to 30.3" Telescoping Cross Arm

  • Compatible with tripods or support systems that feature a 3/8"-16 mount

  • Length and Angle Hash Marks

  • Swivel 360°, Tilt 90° Up or Down

When would I use the Sirui Horizontal Arm?

Top down shots, flat lays, stop motions, 90 degree shots, and lots of other angled shots. This is a great tool to boom your camera out and over your tripod so you can position your camera directly above a product or subject. I use the horizontal arm for all of my top down shots, especially when I’m shooting top down stop motions. (The camera needs to stay as still as possible…aka zero movement).

Where could I use it?

This horizontal arm is extremely small and easy to transport. It unscrews and packs down to fit into a small drawstring bag. With that being said, you could use this attachment arm literally anywhere you like, as long as your tripod fits the space.

Why would I want to use this?

The Sirui Horizontal Arm is a beneficial tool to have in your camera kit. This arm is an incredibly stable yet lightweight camera boom. In addition, it's easy to use and it takes just a minute to attach or detach from any tripod.

If you happen to be into stop motion photography, this horizontal arm is stable enough to execute seamless stop motions. Just don't forget to add a light bag of sand as a counterweight to ensure the camera and tripod are all secure.

But why can't I just use my c-stand?

Sure, a c-stand would work to an extent as a way to hold your camera. Ultimately it's easier to maneuver the camera into position with this horizontal arm. This horizontal arm is also extremely sturdy compared to a c-stand when it comes to stop motion photography.

Grab this arm and save your c-stand for something else. Throw up a light or a perhaps a modifier instead!
